Fall/winter and red lipstick are pretty much synonymous to me. After all, who wants to worry about the maintenance of wearing bright colors on your lips during the summer when you’re just trying to not have your tinted moisturizer melt off of your face?
Red lips are the perfect accent to any outfit in fall and winter. The best – and worst – part is that there are so many different shades to choose from. Do you want a blue-based red? An orange-based red? A deep, vampy red for autumnal-Thanksgiving vibes? A bright, poppy red for Christmas cheer?
Because there are literally hundreds of different colors and formulas to choose from out there on the market, and because I own way too many myself, I’ve detailed some of my favorites here that will work for anyone and everyone:
Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in ‘Icon’ // This is hands-down the best red lipstick of all time. If you’re looking for a moisturizing, full-color formula, Hourglass is the one for you. The packaging is heavy and feels incredibly luxurious. ‘Icon’ is a blue-toned red that looks flattering on pretty much anyone, even if you have warmer undertones. The Hourglass lipstick is a glossy formula, and it wears for hours (though the gloss does fade after a few). I received this as a birthday gift a few years ago, but I think it’s worth the investment if you’re buying it outright. Or, wait until the Sephora 20% off VIB sale in November. Either way, it’s the best. You won’t be disappointed.
NARS Audacious Lipstick in ‘Audrey’ // If you want a slightly-unconventional, super-autumnal red lip, Audrey is for you sister. It’s a very muted red (i.e. works great for both evening and daytime), and it’s got serious plummy/cranberry undertones to it. It’s one of the most interesting reds I’ve ever seen, and I absolutely love it. Besides Hourglass’ Icon, I definitely wear this shade the most. The Audacious formula is fantastic, too. These are highly-pigmented lipsticks that wear for hours without fading. They are also very comfortable on the lips, as well, and don’t settle into lines or bleed outside of them.
Besame Cosmetics Classic Color Lipstick in ‘1946 Red Velvet’ // This is as classic as red lipstick can get, straight down to the packaging, which you easily could’ve found in your grandmother’s makeup back way back in the day. It’s so gorgeous! Besame Cosmetics does a fabulous line of vintage-inspired makeup, and because I tend to romanticize the past, I adore it. Their lipsticks are superb, and they do an entire line of just red lipsticks. I’d actually advise anyone looking for a red to check out Besame Cosmetics’ line first because they do the color so well. ‘1946’ is the color that Hayley Atwell wore in “Agent Carter,” which propelled it to fame. This is a mid-tone, neutral red that isn’t super bright. If you want to feel like a Hollywood starlet from yesteryear, pick this one. The color wears for hours, and it’s a matte formula. Love!
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in ‘Cherry’ // If you are looking for a red lip that’s easy-going and not too bold for daytime, try this chapstick. Fresh makes wonderfully luxurious and comfortable chapstick formulas, and the colors are gorgeous. Cherry is a bright, sheer red that’s great if you want to add a pop of color without it being too overwhelming for school or the office. I definitely love chucking this one in my backpack for when my look needs a pick-me-up throughout the day. Plus your lips will feel so good after wearing it for hours and hours. I have the Fresh chapsticks in nearly every color they make, and they’re worth the $24 investment.
YSL Tint-In-Oil in ‘Cherry My Cherie’ // I have a review of the YSL Tint-In-Oil in Cherry My Cherie here that I did a few years ago, but it’s still one of my favorite products. It’s such a unique lip product – it’s a moisturizing oil that goes on like a sheer gloss, but as it wears on your skin, the color brightens and becomes more pigmented. The gloss fades, and it leaves behind the most gorgeous stain. If you want an “I’ve just eaten a popsicle” kind of red lip that’s subtle but so pretty, pick this one. YSL packaging is to die for, too.
What’s your favorite red lipstick?
